Bulgaria's third largest city is a Black Sea port and has been a summer retreat for many, from ancient Bulgarian nobility to young holidaymakers on the fest. Varna has a lot to offer in terms of seaside entertainment, good food and summer fun for both adults and children. Beaches covered in fine, golden sand, amazing restaurants that are cheap for European prices, and lots of playgrounds and nightclubs make Varna, Bulgaria, an incredible place to explore. Here are 5 things to see/do if you are here.

Central Beach

Beautiful spot for walking along the sea road which includes many km of the city's pedestrian area, which goes from the municipal swimming pool and extends up to the 4th breakwater. The seaside avenue, the central beach and the related spa were built in the 20th century. The establishments have been renovated and are full of restaurants, clubs and bars which complement the vast and wide range of beaches.

Sea Garden

The Sea Garden has the distinction of being one of the liveliest places in Varna. In the morning, it is full of people taking their morning walk. As the day goes on, the children go out with their parents for ice cream, while the adults sip a coffee. From the park you can also appreciate the view of the sea or allow you to go down towards the alleys for a walk.

The Archaeological Museum

Varna's Roman heritage has given the city a treasure trove of precious artifacts. It houses a collection of gold and precious objects recovered from the Varna necropolis, where the Thracian tombs date back 6,500 years ago. This makes the Varna Gold the oldest gold treasure in the world with numerous jewels, utensils and other decorative objects.

The monasters

Just beyond the north-eastern outskirts of Varna lies a stunning complex of Orthodox rock monasteries that is part of a protected natural area just off the coast. These caves are man-made and have been specially dug into the wall of a 25 meter high karst cliff. Inside you can see mosaics that have survived very well and medieval frescoes that have partly been lost.

The events

Varna has a rich cultural life. The two main events are: the International Ballet Competition, the oldest ballet competition in the world, often called the Ballet Olympics. Consider that the winners of previous editions have become leading dancers in world-famous theaters and groups. Then there is the Varna Summer International Music Festival, the oldest music festival in Bulgaria and one of the longest running festivals in Europe.
